Understanding what
Admission Committees are Looking For
When you’re applying to colleges it’s important to understand what the admissions committee is looking for. I discussed this with two individuals who are on the college admissions committee for their respective universities in my most recent Coffee with Kim. Click here to watch the video in its entirety.
For now, I want to discuss what admissions committees are looking for other than your GPA or class rank. They’re going to look at your curriculum choices and activities and here’s why:
CURRICULUM CHOICES
- This is very important for colleges because a GPA alone doesn’t tell you too much, but curriculum choices give them a clear idea of the level of course work.
- They are looking for the student’s highest level of proficiency (honors & AP).
- They’ll also consider credits that are transferring in for students when they take college level courses in high school.
ACTIVITIES
- Colleges like to see students submit their resumes with additional information.
- Most universities look for well rounded students that are involved academically and socially.
These are just two aspects of the college application that are used to determine if you will be accepted to that college. They also look at your high school profile, the majors you’re interested in and your personal characteristics. To hear a deeper discussion on these topics and more watch the entire discussion with the admissions committee reps here!
