Ways to Stand Out in Your College Acceptance Essay
The competition to get into college can be fierce. Whatever schools you apply to, you want to make sure you stand out in the crowd. The majority of your application is out of your control, but the essay is your chance to leave an impression.
When writing your essay keep these tips in mind:
- Pick an essay topic that will show your personality and tell admissions something different than what they learn from your application.
- Identify a topic that allows you to tell a story and helps you stand out.
- Answer the question personably and be creatively.
- Write your essay in a newspaper format. (capture attention ASAP and wrap up with a nice ending)
- Ensure you have proper grammar, proofread the essay carefully.
- Have someone look over your essay and give you feedback.
- Make the essay snapshot of your life.
- When answering the “Why do you want to go here?” question – don’t tell them what you think they want to hear. (It’s a great school etc.) Instead, tell them what will stand out and hit home for admissions people (majors that are not too common, size, location, abroad programs, extracurriculars, student life)
- When talking about failure, finish with success. End the essay on a high note.
These tips can MAKE OR BREAK a decision for students right on the bubble. This is the chance for admissions officers to make a connection with you. Admission officers are human so make sure you treat them as such, but also stand out in the crowd.
